Spirit box online
Turn the dial, listen through the static and catch what the other side is trying to say. A free ghost box game in your browser, with real human voices.
The spirit box
The radio is off.
Ghost hunter:
The signal is gone.
Your EVP log
Best with headphones. Contains a sudden loud scare at the end of each night.
How to play
- Switch the radio on and give the tubes a moment to warm up. Put your headphones on, the quiet parts matter. You are not alone: a ghost hunter sits with you in the room. Her voice comes without static, and what she says is not a message.
- Turn the dial. Drag the scale, or use the arrow keys. Somewhere in the static, voices are broadcasting. When you get close, a carrier whistle rises out of the noise: the closer you are, the lower it gets.
- Hold it there. Close to the frequency, the static gives way and a voice comes through. Stay with it for a moment, and the message goes straight into your EVP log. Then listen to what it has to say. Missed a word? The voice stays on its frequency for a little while, so you can tune back and hear it again.
- Keep listening. Every night has three stages and 12 messages. With every stage, the voices change, and they start to notice you. Finish the night, if you dare.
Stuck? Press Scan and the radio races through the frequencies on its own, just like a real spirit box. You will catch fragments, but to record a message, you have to tune in by hand.
Keyboard
- ← →
- Turn the dial by 0.05 MHz. Hold Shift for 0.5 MHz.
- Page Up Page Down
- Jump by 1 MHz.
- Mouse wheel
- Fine tuning, while the pointer is over the scale.
What is a spirit box?
A spirit box, also called a ghost box, is a radio that sweeps through the frequencies without stopping. Paranormal investigators use them in haunted places and listen for words in the chopped static: answers, names, warnings. Recordings of such voices are called EVP, electronic voice phenomena.
This spirit box is a game. It does not detect anything, and nothing in it is random noise turned into words: every voice you hear is a real recording, performed by me with a real voice in front of a real microphone, and then sent through the static of a very old radio.
The voices behind the static
Every message in the spirit box comes from my free sound library. Lost souls, warnings and threats, picked from these collections:
- Dark Witch
- Ghost Bride
- Ghost Hunters
- Lady in White
- Lunaria
- Possessed
- Seekers
- Vampiress
- Women in Despair
- Women in Dread
- Women in Fear
Found a voice you like? Every entry in your EVP log links to its page, where you can download it as a WAV file for your own projects, commercial ones included. See the license. No AI voices, no voice cloning: read why that matters to me.
Good to know
Does this spirit box detect real ghosts?
No. It is a game with recorded voices. If something answers you that is not in your EVP log, I would like to hear about it.
I hear nothing on my iPhone.
Check the ring/silent switch and the volume. The game asks your phone to play sound even in silent mode, but older iOS versions ignore that request.
How loud is the scare?
Loud enough to make you jump, not loud enough to hurt. If you play with headphones, keep the volume where speech is comfortable.
Is every night the same?
No. The frequencies change every night, and so do the voices: each night picks other messages from a pool of more than fifty.
Can I use the voices in my own game or video?
Yes. Every voice in the spirit box is a free download in the library, for personal and commercial use. Follow the link in your EVP log to get the WAV file.
